From David Peltier’s recent letters to Green Politics:
“Dear Friends, I want to welcome you all to the central coast of Oregon, where the Red Cedar Ecology Center is nestled on 30 acres we call Madre Corazon. Our tiny ecology center is open for all to enjoy.
“The national forest lands are by law owned by you and me and we have to keep up with the policies of the USFS. Our work is to preserve 70 acres as a legacy forest, and to honor the people who work in our forests with a 40-acre working forest. As a 53-year-young sustainable forester, I respect the hard work involved with transforming the fruits of the land into usable products. I am a tree-hugging lobbyist, an over-educated curmudgeon, former house-builder, Wisconsin born, Obama voting, thirty-year experienced activist. Our forest is one mile from the Pacific Ocean and if you need some time off, come on by if you're in the neighborhood. Sell a kidney if you want to drive from the midwest to Oregon, or hitch-hike.
“I'll treat you to coffee at the Green Salmon Coffee Shop in Yachats and you can sample some of Deb's organic pastries if you dare. We have a vibrant community here and eccentric people like me fit in with no trouble. My land partner Carlos P. Nunez MFT PhD says that I'm ‘irascible’ but that’s only when I'm fulminating at the Bush Administration.
“The central coast of Oregon, like most all the coast, has no more affordable housing. We bought four years ago on May 6, 2004 and barely got into the market. Our conservation sector is growing and I felt we needed a center. I am a house-builder so I built Red Cedar over a six-month period. Our land is about two miles from the Pacific Ocean. We have many ocean views, a creek, springs and 25,000 trees.
“We have an opportunity to build for environmental activities here. It will take time. We welcome organizers coming to visit for some R&R. Our trails can be healing. Our decent weather has arrived (finally!).
“I'm a lobbyist here in Oregon and I help distribute publications such as In Good Tilth (organic certification), and the ForestVoice (eco-forestry). Love to have you all come out and visit. The Oregon coast is spectacular and you would need a few lifetimes to see everything. Take care all!”
